London artists are building a floating architecture project called ‘Open Sailing’. [Oliver Palmer, Open Sailing Co-Designer]: “We want to create an alternative life at sea that’s a lovely alternative to your life on the land. So you have a completely sociable place, you have yummie (tasty) food, you have lots of friends, you have everything you have on land but you are living on the sea.” The key aspects of Open Sailing are sustainability and self-sufficiency. To that aim, the structure will be made of steel and recycled plastic bottles. [Oliver Palmer, Open_Sailing Co-Designer]: “We are creating a new kind of structure for the ship. So we want a sandwich of rebar and rebar with plastic bottles in the middle." The Open Sailing boat will be totally self-sufficient in terms of energy and food supply. Free energy will be harnessed using wind, solar and wave power and an open fish farm will slowly be forming along the floating structures. The project will also serve as an international sea station for scientists. [Oliver Palmer, Open_Sailing Co-Designer]: “We want to use the lab to explore all sorts of things like tidal drift patterns, mapping of the sea. There's also a lot of life saving potential for it. Plus we are going to use it to work out farming techniques and things like that.” The Open Sailing vessel will be launched at sea this summer, and will venture crossing the North Sea from London to Holland. NTD, Olga Martinez, London =================== We go now to London where a group of designers are working on the first international ocean station. NTD's Olga Martinez has the story.
